Product Description

This wonderful 1930s drinks menu from La Cucaracha Cocktail Club in Mexico City features an elegantly dressed cockroach in top hat and tails. Bug-eyed, he is smoking a cigar and carrying a walking stick. We love the spats on his feet. The cocktail club was located in the city's historic center. A review published in 1939 says: "La Cucaracha is not only smart but artistic as well. The murals of old Mexican folk dances done by Machado are superb, and the liquors are perfect."

The charming menu cover pays homage to Mexico's best-known folk song "La Cucaracha," which was popular with rebel and government forces alike during the Mexican revolution of the early 20th century. Inside the menu are ink drawings of la cucaracha and his friends relaxing over cocktails at the bar. There's also a cockroach that has passed out at a table on the rear cover. More than 40 cocktails, several featuring absinthe, are listed. The club no longer exists.
