Kodiak bears are the largest bears in the world. A large male can stand over ten feet tall when on his hind legs and five feet tall when on all four legs. They weigh up to 1,500 pounds. Females are about 20% smaller and 30% lighter.

A unique subs-species of the brown or grizzly bear, they live exclusively in the Kodiak archipelago and have been isolated from other bears for about 12,000 years. There are about 3,500 Kodiak bears, a density of about 0.7 bears per square mile.

It was clever of the unnamed artist, therefore, to use one of these magnificent creatures on the cover of the Town Club menu in Kodiak. The bear has the menu in his powerful paws and an expression on his face of ‘ hmm... What will I have?’

From the prices, we believe this menu is from the 1970s. So far, we haven’t been able to track down much information about the restaurant because it  closed decades ago. We will update when we can.

Kodiak is the main city and one of seven communities on Kodiak Island, Alaska. All commercial transportation between the island's communities and the outside world goes through this city via ferryboat or airline.
